Technology and Power: A Crucial Topic to Explore in the Classroom
By Laurence Renaud
Technofascism is characterized by the use of digital technologies to promote authoritarian, violent , and dictatorial ideologies that reject human rights, individual freedom, and democracy—that is, fascist ideologies .
At a time when social media influences our relationships and societal choices, it is essential to analyze how technologies can become dangerous tools in the service of authoritarianism.
Today, social media algorithms favor sensationalist or provocative content, increasing its visibility. These systems facilitate radicalization: watching a video with conspiracy content will then push similar content, easily leading to exclusive consumption of conspiracy material. The user then finds himself in an echo chamber , where almost no divergent perspectives are visible, thus favoring the normalization of extremist and dangerous ideologies.
In the face of technofascism, it is essential to decentralize media and digital platforms. We must collectively regain control of these technologies to limit their coercive power. Only democratic, inclusive, and transparent management of algorithms can thwart the spread of hateful ideologies.
Parité sciences invites you to discuss concrete examples of science and technology that impact society in your classes and with your colleagues. If you have any to share, please write to us!
